OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.147 standard requires authorized and affected employees to be trained on the hazards of uncontrolled energy and how your company’s LOTO program works.

Authorized employees apply lockout/tagout, while affected employees work around equipment that may be locked out.

LOTO training must cover:

  • When LOTO is required.
  • Types of hazardous energy.
  • How energy is isolated and controlled.
  • The purpose and function of locks and tags.
  • The difference between authorized and affected roles.
  • How LOTO protects workers during servicing and maintenance.

Employers must also provide workplace-specific instruction so employees understand the exact equipment, energy sources, and lockout/tagout procedures used at their job site.
